THE TREBLE BOYS
The Treble Boys 1983 independent single, “Julie-Anne” gained much critical acclaim in the music press including Billboard who called the release a “Top Recommended Pick.” Playing the NYC circuit from 1981-1983, they were regulars at CBGB’s and were even picked by club owner Hilly Krystal to be the first band featured on the CBGB’s TV Show. 20 years later, music journalist Jordan Oakes called to invite the band to be a part of the “Yellow Pills Prefill” (later, renamed “Buttons Starter Kit”) release from Numero Group, a compilation of that critic’s favorites. Two songs were featured: “Julie-Anne” and “One Kiss.”
“‘Julie-Anne’ is a perfectly modern tune, a tribute in disguise. The fact that it sounds like a Hollies song only distracts from the other wonderful touches like the Blondie/Roxy Music instrumental intro and the pleasingly subtle strain of country in the verses. The drummer on ‘Julie-Anne’ is Andy Newmark who played on (John Lennon’s) Double Fantasy and with Roxy Music (no wonder.) ‘One Kiss’ sounds akin to The Rubinoos at their yearning best. Bottom Line: This is one ‘80s record that does not sound dated. The Trebles Boys should have been a household name - or at least a venue-hold name. The Treble Boys would have topped them all.” - Jordan Oakes
